Dear Parent/Guardian,

Thank you for your interest in camper information. Our camps welcome children ages 7-17 from across the country who have experienced the death of a close loved one. Our camps are free and held primarily in Richmond, Virginia with a satellite program in the New York/New Jersey area. Travel scholarships for a child and a parent/guardian are also available.

I started this camp because I lost my parents when I was a child; my mother died when I was 9 from a blood clot and my father when I was 12 from a heart attack. There were no grief resources when I was going through my loss and sadly today there are not many more.

I went to camp as a kid and LOVED it. It’s a magical place where time stands still and you “turbo bond’ with everyone at camp. The love of camp and the need for resources for grieving children were at the root of founding CZC. I wanted to provide a place where kids could meet other kids who had also experienced a loss when they were actually going through the grieving process instead of waiting 5, 10 or even 20 years to start working on healing.

Why is a camp like CZC important?

Most grieving children have not met another child who has experienced a significant death. Comfort Zone breaks their isolation and lets them drink in the message, “I am not alone”.

Society typically only gives you 6 months and maybe a year to “get over” your loss. In reality, grief is a life long journey. We provide a community where kids can come year after year and offer them tools to help them cope in their daily lives.

Parents, understandably so, may be struggling with their own grief and may need a hand in helping their child manage their loss.

Grieving children often become miniature adults before they should have to. Comfort Zone provides a fun and safe healing environment where kids can have fun, be around people who “get it” and get back to being kids again.

I urge you to take the risk of sending your child to Comfort Zone Camp. What we typically see is the child you drop off and the child you pick up are visibly different – happier, freed up and one who wants to come back.
